New Legislation Being Considered by the State to Fully Open the Market to Electric Competition

The Pennsylvania state legislature is currently considering new legislation called the Electric Competition Benefits Enhancement Act (SB 1121). This act proposes to create a fully-competitive retail electric market in the state, while continuing to ensure that customers have access to reasonable and reliable electric service. We are encouraging our customers to reach out to state legislator(s) to show their support for a fully-competitive retail electric market.

When would this go into effect?

If this legislation passes both the Pennsylvania Senate and House and is signed into law, the transition will occur in June 2015. Following a comprehensive customer education campaign and notice period, power customers in the state that have not switched to a supplier by June 2015 will be transitioned to the competitive market (through a transfer process) to a participating electric generation supplier, like Direct Energy Business.

How can I show my support for this bill?

We are encouraging our customers to reach out to state legislator(s) to show their support for a fully-competitive retail electric market by:
  • Visiting www.energyconsumersfirst.com and entering their zip code at the bottom of the page. This will allow you to select your state legislator(s) and send an email to them directly from the site, encouraging them to support the legislation.
  • You may add your company information to this letter and mail it to your legislator(s) or you may email your completed letter to Ashley Ramer, Direct Energy Business Government & Regulatory Affairs Representative, who will ensure that it is delivered to the appropriate legislator(s). Please indicate if you have a particular contact in the state legislature that you have been in contact with and we will ensure it is delivered to them and any other representative(s) for the districts where your business has operations.
