Early Morning Update

The Nov16 natural gas contract is trading down $0.03 to $3.16.  The Nov16 crude contract is up $0.37 at $50.18.

Natural gas prices surged higher on Friday, settling at their highest level since January 2015.  The prompt month has moved higher in the last five trading sessions, gaining almost 10% in the past week.  Although dry production has been foundering lately, there is little else that signifies a bullish change in fundamentals. Weather outlooks show parts of the western U.S. cooling off a bit, with some areas forecast to be below normal, and the weekly storage report issued last Thursday was larger than anticipated, beating all estimates.  Even money managers became more bearish in the week ended Oct. 4, cutting their long position from 124,065 contracts the previous week to 99,393 in the reporting week.  However, once prices surpassed $3.05/MMBtu on Friday, the year-to-date peak set in September, traders continued buying, fearing a rally higher and not wanting to be left behind.  The prompt month eventually settled at $3.193/MMBtu, up 14.4 cents on the day.
