Early Morning Update

The May16 natural gas contract is trading flat at $2.00.  The May16 crude contract is down $0.30 at $35.40.

Stubborn cold helped push natural gas prices higher in this week’s opening session, as the May16 NYMEX contract rose 4.2 cents, settling at $1.998/MMBtu yesterday.  Lingering cold weather in major heating demand areas, especially the Northeast, is providing plenty of support for prices, and looks to stall the onset of the storage injection season.  This morning, Bentek Energy is projecting single-digit builds for the next two weeks, followed by a return to withdrawals, albeit small, in the third week.  Res/comm demand is expected to rise to its highest level in the last two weeks today, up 2.1 Bcf/d to 31.6 Bcf/d, leading the overall rise in U.S. demand to 81.4 Bcf/d, a 1.9 Bcf/d day-over-day increase.  U.S. dry production, meanwhile, fell 0.8 Bcf/d reaching a fresh year-to-date low at 71.0 Bcf/d.
