Direct Energy has developed a smart grid policy that urges policymakers and regulators to ensure that smart grid initiatives such as the Smart Grid Advancement Act do not hinder competition in states that empower customers to choose an alternative retail energy supplier. Specifically, policymakers and regulators should consider the following:

But even if you follow the trends in retail gas and retail power prices, which are strongly correlated, it seems that wholesale natural gas and crude oil prices are not moving together much of the time when they should trend together.

There are many reasons why natural gas and oil prices should trend together. Oil and gas demand are both driven by trends in energy usage for the same purposes including space heating, power generation, manufacturing, etc. When energy demand increases or decreases, it generally changes for all fuels.

ERCOT comes close to all-time peak energy demand

I recently read an article about ERCOT coming close to its all-time peak demand last Wednesday as it saw the third highest level of use, according to the ISO. According to the article, demand maxed out at 67,180 MWs from 4 to 5 PM, but ERCOT experienced no problems meeting that level of demand with over 74,000 MWs of supply available, including 2,300 MWs of wind power. This was the highest level of demand in 2013 so far, due to it being a rather mild summer.
