Electric choice is paying huge dividends for businesses.

Recently, Energy Research Consulting Group (ERCG) released an independent study examining the electricity cost savings achieved by commercial customers that switched from the default utility rate to a retail energy supplier in a number of deregulated states and regions.

One of those states benefiting from electric choice is Illinois. Between 2011 and 2015, the Land of Lincoln's businesses saved an estimated and staggering $1.7 billion simply by making the switch to a retail energy provider. That translates to an average of $337 million in commercial electric savings each year.

What accounted for the significant electricity savings among Illinois commercial customers? According to ERCG, utility rates that were noticeably out of step with actual market rates. The Illinois Power Agency (IPA) – which procures power for the major utilities in the Prairie State – had legislative mandates that set prices on the high side for utility customers.
