U.S. Commercial Buildings Cut Energy Intensity 12%. Here's How.

It's no secret that energy efficiency is playing an increasingly important role in the U.S. economy.

That's especially true in the commercial building sector. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's latest Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey, commercial buildings have significantly reduced energy intensity in recent years.

From 2003 to 2012, U.S. commercial buildings cut energy intensity by an average of 12 percent. During that same time frame, government-owned commercial buildings at the local, state and federal level — which account for about 14 percent of all commercial buildings — cut energy intensity by nearly one-quarter.

The chart below highlights the decrease in energy consumption per square foot in U.S. commercial and government buildings.

What's driving the decrease in energy intensity across commercial buildings?

By and large, it's building owners and operators taking control of their energy use through a number of strategic steps: establishing a clear energy management plan, setting meaningful savings targets, monitoring energy usage and equipment performance in real time, and making necessary efficiency upgrades.

Direct Energy Business is proud to offer commercial building owners and operators a number of energy-saving solutions. Panoramic Power — which analyzes 8 billion data points per month and counting – offers larger businesses a device-level energy management solution. The wireless sensors clip directly onto circuit wires, capture device-level data in real-time and process data in an analytics platform. On average, the technology's insights are estimated to help save 12 percent for businesses, allowing operators to see how they can become more energy efficient, how their equipment is functioning and how they can improve their overall business operations.
