How might rising coal prices impact natural gas prices?

In the Weekly Energy Market Update for February 29, 2016, Tim Bigler — Direct Energy Business Energy Advisor — highlights natural gas and electricity prices, which are currently at all-time lows in many consumption regions.

Natural Gas and Electricity Prices

Nationwide, both natural gas and electricity prices have been in a downtrend. The only regions not experiencing all-time lows are the New England and New York City regions. For the rest of the United States, the respective price strips for 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 are at all-time lows.

The Impact of Coal Prices

As coal prices continue to rise, it takes the pressure off of natural gas prices to go any lower.
