We've put together a short list and infographic on five ways small businesses can "go green" while also boosting their bottom line.
Recycling is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to become a more eco-friendly business. By recycling a ton of mixed paper, your business can save the energy equivalent of 185 gallons of gasoline and by recycling one ton of aluminum cans, your business can conserve the equivalent of 1,665 gallons of gasoline.
Turn off lights and unused equipment at night. Energy-efficient light bulbs — which include halogen bulbs, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and light emitting diodes (LEDs) — can use up to 80 percent less energy than conventional lighting and last up to 25 times longer.
Even more green: use daylight. After all, it’s free and efficient.
Install motion-controlled faucets and water-saving fixtures like toilets, showers, and sprinklers. Also, be sure to repair any leaking taps and pipes as soon as possible to avoid hot water loss.
Consider upgrading your HVAC system and be sure to regularly clean the filters. Using shades, blinds, and fans to manage office temperatures can help spaces feel more comfortable with thermostats set 3 degrees higher in the summer.
You can also enroll in the Back to Business plan to receive a 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat at no extra cost.
As old appliances or food service equipment fails, replace them with ENERGY STAR-qualified products, some of which can save more than 45 percent of the energy used by conventional models. When buying new refrigerators, choose AA++ rated units as they have the lowest running costs.
