What is the current outlook for long-term electricity prices?

In the Weekly Energy Market Update for February 1, 2016, Tim Bigler — Direct Energy Business Energy Advisor — overviews some interesting trends in the structure of 2017-2019 regional electricity prices.

Natural Gas and Electricity Prices

There have not been any substantial changes in week-over-week natural gas and electricity prices. Both remain range bound.

2017-2019 Regional Electricity Prices

In the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions, year-over-year electricity prices are declining due to forecasted natural gas prices. ERCOT prices are showing a higher correlation with NYMEX prices. In California, prices are increasing due to a leak in a storage cavern, which may not be available during peak periods.
