It's no secret that small businesses play a huge role in the U.S. economy.

1. 28.2 million. As of 2011, there were more than 28 million small businesses — independent businesses with 500 employees or less — in the United States. These small businesses make up a staggering 99.7 percent of employer firms in the U.S. economy.
2. 63 percent. Between 1993 and 2013, small businesses accounted for 14.9 million net new jobs created in the United States, or 63 percent. Small firms between 20-499 employees led job creation during that time period.
3. 9.9 million. According to the National Women's Business Council, there were 9.9 million women-owned businesses in 2012, a marked 27.5 percent increase from 2007. These businesses generated $1.6 trillion in receipts in 2012.
4. 9.1 percent. The Small Business Administration (SBA) reports that 9.1 percent of small firms were veteran-owned businesses in 2012. In 2007, that number topped 3.7 million total businesses, with average receipts of $450,000.
5. 16x more. Among high patenting firms, small businesses led in innovation, producing 16 times more patents per employee than large patenting firms.
