5 Small Business Energy Tips for the Holiday Season

read | Share:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s program, ENERGY STAR, estimates that U.S. small businesses collectively spend a staggering $60 billion on energy costs each year.

However, depending on building size and business type, businesses could cut their energy costs 10-30 percent with simple efficiency upgrades and small behavioral adjustments.

With the holiday and heating season upon us, here are five straightforward energy tips for small businesses:

5. Improve your heating.

It’s important to “tune-up” your HVAC system before each heating and cooling season. Even an ENERGY STAR-approved HVAC system can decline in performance without regular maintenance. By conducting regular maintenance, you can save your business energy and money while potentially extending the life of your system.

Also, be sure to plug any leaks to prevent heat loss. Caulking and weather stripping can help you better manage ventilation and, in turn, your energy costs.

4. Use energy-efficient lighting.

Energy-efficient light bulbs — which include halogen bulbs, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and light emitting diodes (LEDs) — use up to 80 percent less energy than conventional lighting and can last up to 25 times longer.

Even better: while daylight is shorter in winter months, use it when possible. After all, it’s efficient and free.

3. Adjust the temperature.

Set the thermostat at an optimal 68 degrees Fahrenheit for heating. Depending on your business size and type, an additional 4-5 percent in energy costs could be added for each additional degree in heating.

2. Install a 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat – for free.
