Winter Weather Forecast: First Polar Vortex of the Season is Underway

read | Share:

This week, much of North America is finding itself in the grips of an extremely strong outbreak of cold air, as the first visit of the Polar Vortex of the season is underway. Given very strong blocking areas of high pressure in the jet stream over the West Coast and Greenland, this piece of the Polar Vortex is likely to remain locked in across the US through the entire week, before some rapid moderation takes over this weekend into early next week.

Given this strong anomaly, and the amount of time it is expected to linger around, this week looks to feature the coldest conditions nationally for that calendar week going back all the way to 1950, resulting in record heating demand.

Again, some relief looks to be on the way towards this weekend and early Thanksgiving week, but the Polar Vortex has definitely not seen its last visit of the winter.
