Precise Arguments Warranted in Arizona Electric Deregulation Discussion

read | Share:

As you may know, whether or not to deregulate the Arizona electric market is under hot debate. And Commissioner Bob Burns is not pleased with the way the Arizona electric deregulation debate is shaping up as far as the messaging from deregulation’s critics is concerned.

He says their campaign is aimed at scaring the public about electric retail, which is not helpful to commissioners who want precise information about the pros and cons of electric deregulation.

We at Direct Energy are in support of electric deregulation in Arizona because we believe customers deserve to make their own choice as to who they pay for their power. I’d like to point out that 17 other states in the U.S. have successfully implemented electric market deregulation, such as nearby Texas. In fact, almost three-fourths of customers on the state’s primary grid, managed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), can choose their electricity provider. According to a survey conducted by J.D. Power, customers in Texas’ competitive market are more satisfied with their prices than customers in regulated utilities operated by cities or co-ops.

So, what’s the bottom line for Arizona’s residents and businesses? Make sure you’re gleaning information from both sides of the argument from credible resources. Learn more about the benefits of electric competition from a credible resource, the Arizonans for Electric Choice & Competition.
